Important employee benefits trends are on the horizon for large employers in 2021 including expected increases in the cost of benefits, the exponential growth in telemedicine, and a growing focus on mental health and population health management, according to a survey by Business Group on Health.
Forecasting Cost Increases
Large employers expect benefits costs to rise by more than 5% in 2021.
Seeing Exponential Growth in Virtual Care
The pandemic has sharply accelerated the use of virtual care. Eighty percent say that virtual health will play a significant role in the future of care -- a sharp increase from 64% last year and 52% in 2018. Fifty-two percent plan to offer more virtual care options next year.
Nearly all employers will offer telehealth for minor, acute services in 2021. Virtual care for musculoskeletal management has the greatest growth potential. Employers are also expanding other virtual services including health coaching.
Addressing Mental Health
Ninety-one percent will offer tele-mental health, which could grow to 96% by 2023. Employers are expected to boost their investment in mental health and emotional well-being programs. Eighty-eight percent will provide access to online mental health support resources, such as apps, videos, and articles in 2021 compared to 69% today. Fifty-four percent are lowering or waiving costs for virtual mental health services in 2021 and 27% will reduce the cost of worksite counseling services.
Linking Health Care with Workforce Strategies
Forty-five percent of employers view their health care strategy as integral to their workforce strategy compared to 36% in 2019.
Increasing Onsite Clinics
Seventy-two percent have an onsite clinic or will have one by 2023.
Creating Primary Care Strategies
Fifty-one percent will have at least one advanced primary care strategy next year up from 46% in 2020. Primary care arrangements focus on prevention, the management of chronic diseases, mental health, and whole-person care.
