When you look at healthcare spending on a yearly basis, the increases don’t seem that big. But when you add up nine years of increases, the results are staggering. From 2007 to 2016, there was a 44% increase in the total spending per capita (not including premiums) on health services for enrollees in employer-sponsored insurance plans.
The study, published in a recent edition of the Health Affairs Journal, is based on a national sample of health care claims data from the Health Care Cost Institute. Spending increased across all major categories of health services. Growth rates for total per capita spending generally slowed after 2009 but increased from 2014 to 2016. Spending for outpatient services grew faster than for other services with an average annual growth rate of 5.7%.
