Anthem Blue Cross is issuing rebate checks to certain employers in accordance with medical loss ratio (MLR) provisions under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Small group medical carriers are required to spend 80% of earned premium on medical costs, such as hospital bills and healthcare services. Due to better-than-expected claims costs, Anthem spent less than 80% on medical costs from 2015 to 2017. The difference results in a check to affected employers at an average of $142 per member. It is important to note that employers that were not enrolled in 2017 will not receive checks.
Employers can anticipate rebate checks from Anthem in the next two weeks. They have the option to distribute rebates to their employees or apply the rebate toward future premiums.
Cal Cobra members will receive a check directly from Anthem. Anthem’s FAQ can help answer some of your questions.
