Anthem Blue Cross is making three important plan option updates in response to COVID-19:
- Special enrollment period through July 31, 2020 for an August 1, 2020 effective date: Fully Insured and self-funded groups can offer a special enrollment period to enroll employees who did not elect to enroll in coverage during open enrollment. Life and disability are excluded. This group special enrollment period will go through July 31, 2020 and is available to large and small groups. Coverage would be effective no later than August 1, 2020.
- Plan downgrade option for July 1, 2020 and August 1, 2020 effective dates: Currently covered employees can switch to a lower-priced medical plan when one is offered, but not a more expensive plan. This option is available for July 1, 2020 and August 1, 2020 effective dates.
- Extended flexibility on eligibility requirements until September 30, 2020: Anthem will cover furloughed employees or those with reduced hours through September 30, 2020 as long as the monthly premium is received. In an effort to keep members covered, they are extending this flexibility, which was set to expire on July 31, 2020.
