Bill Would Allow HSAs for Direct Primary Care
A new bill would make direct primary care (DPC) eligible for HSA contributions. Pre-tax HSA funds could be used to pay DPC fees. U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Doug Jones (D-AL), Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced the bipartisan legislation, which they say would reduce health care costs and expand access to primary care providers. Current law makes DPC incompatible with HSAs paired with high-deductible health plans.
DPC models replace copays and deductibles with flat, affordable monthly fees. They focus on prevention and primary care, relying less on specialist and hospital referrals.
