Blue Shield of California implemented a correction for the age calculation of new employees. Last year, they discovered that they had not rated Small Business new hire subscribers correctly because of system complications. For new groups enrolled with a September 1, 2016 effective date or later, this problem was resolved, but for existing groups, the issue remained open.
The system resolution for existing small business groups was implemented in April 2017. Blue Shield of California recently validated that the age attainment fix was successful and all existing small business groups will see the fix applied starting October 1, 2017.
After this date, all new enrolling members will see the correct premium amount charged on the group's invoice which will be based on the age at the time of enrollment. This applies to all existing groups, even those scheduled to renew after October 2017.
The system error resulted in a favorable age rating for new employees. No retroactive billing correction was, or will be, implemented.
