Effective immediately, Blue Shield of California is allowing a cross-border health plan to be written alongside Blue Shield and another carrier. That includes SIMNSA (Sistemas Medicos Nacionales, S.A. de C.V.) or MediExcel, but not both. Their standard underwriting policy allows only one other carrier to be written alongside Blue Shield. Blue Shield has also made these underwriting updates:
- There is no DE 9C requirement for groups with 5 or more enrolling employees when submitted with the completed and signed Eligibility/Participation Attestation and the most recent group medical bill. (Exceptions apply.)
- An employee’s refusal-of-coverage due to having individual coverage now counts as a valid waiver. Employees who waive group coverage due to having individual coverage don’t count against the group participation requirement.
- Another way that Blue Shield is making it easier for new groups to join is allowing a minimum premium deposit of 25% for the fourth quarter, with the balance applied to the group's first bill.
- You can enroll a group with as few as one employees when selecting Trio plans only.
- All other group participation requirements still apply.
