Today, Blue Shield of California announced their next phase of reimagining pharmacy care by collaborating with like-minded companies to make a more transparent and affordable pharmacy supply chain model. Together, they believe they can address today's broken pharmacy system of skyrocketing costs, and lack of accountability and transparency, which worsen inequities and outcomes in health care.
Blue Shield members and group customers should not anticipate any immediate changes to their pharmacy plans related to this initiative. It is important to note that while this new model addresses many aspects of the pharmacy supply chain that drive costs, essential elements of the member experience – formularies and their retail pharmacy network – are not directly affected by this new model.
Once fully implemented in 2025, this reimagined pharmacy supply chain model has potential for significant annual drug cost savings. While taking this bold initiative, Blue Shield recognizes that the pharmacy supply chain is not simple. However, it need not be as complex and opaque as it is today.
Up through the implementation in 2025, Blue Shield will keep their brokers, group customers, and members informed of progress and what they can expect next in their pharmacy benefits.
