Blue Shield understands there has been confusion surrounding members’ ability to seek care with Providence Health & Services (Providence) in Southern California. In May, Blue Shield announced that Providence had rescinded its termination and a new contractual agreement with Blue Shield was instated. While an agreement was reached, Blue Shield and Providence made the difficult decision to remove Providence medical groups based in Orange County (Region 18) from the Individual Family Plan (IFP) Trio HMO network. This change – effective August 1, 2024 – was also announced at that time.
For clarity and ease, here is a list of the impacted medical groups:
- St. Jude Heritage Medical Group
- St. Joseph Heritage Medical Group
- Mission Heritage Medical Group
- Providence Affiliated Physicians St. Jude
- Providence Affiliated Physicians St. Joseph
- Providence Affiliated Physicians Mission
That said, Blue Shield is reiterating that these medical groups, along with other Providence medical groups, facilities, and providers are still available to all other Blue Shield members, including IFP PPO plan members. And again, this network adjustment impacts Individual Family Plan (IFP) Trio HMO in Orange County only.
Please note the following for IFP Trio HMO members in Orange County:
Members who sought care from Providence medical groups were contacted in May to be reassigned to other high-quality medical groups within their service area and received new corresponding ID cards, effective August 1, 2024.
Members have the opportunity to select a different PCP or medical group by using Blue Shield’s Find a Doctor tool available online at blueshieldca.com/fad or by contacting Blue Shield Customer Service using the telephone number on the back of their member ID card.
Blue Shield would like to thank you for your patience as they continue to provide access to the best possible care for members.
