In response to the U.S. Supreme Court Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Blue Shield of California introduced a travel reimbursement program ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for its members, regardless of state restrictions. This travel reimbursement program was designed to help members in states with bans or restrictions on covered services to travel to locations where these services are legally available. While the program doesn’t alter coverage for the services themselves, it supports access to eligible care through BlueCard or out-of-network benefits. This program has been in place since July 2022.
Beginning January 1, 2025, this program will expand to include travel reimbursement for gender-affirming care. You can view program details here.
