Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 890 into law. It will allow nurse practitioners to practice without physician supervision after a three-year or 4,600-hour transition to practice. The majority of California’s 27,700 active nurse practitioners have at least three years of practice experience, according to the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Santa Rosa), who sponsored the bill said, “A significant percentage of physicians are over retirement age and new physicians are not keeping up with the need…The number of residency programs will never be enough to meet the current and future needs in California.”
