A survey by Oliver Wyman reveals that, on average, consumers like healthcare clinics; they value wellness support; and they’d rather pay more upfront to have lower deductibles. More than one-third of those who used a retail clinic in the past year said the experience was better than a traditional doctor’s office. Only 16% thought it was worse. This is true across all generations — even for Baby Boomers. Despite the fact that consumers are happy about their visits to retail clinics, alternative health care venues have yet to take off. In 2018 only 8% of consumers used a retail clinic, and only 10% used telehealth. These numbers remain virtually unchanged since 2017. High-deductible health plans (HDHP)s will again be the predominant option for consumers. However, only 21% of consumers prefer a plan that has lower upfront costs, but could lead to higher out-of-pocket expenditures. Consumers also value wellness with many saying that they would rather have help managing their diet and stress (more than 40%) than having a lower bill (35%). The preferences of each group and each employee are different. Y
