Primary care physicians can help California members find and access the right care at the right time.
Effective Jan. 1, 2022, UnitedHealthcare Select Plus plan members are encouraged to choose a primary care provider (PCP). If they need help finding one, UnitedHealthcare will make a recommendation on their behalf. Although the Select Plus plan does not require members to choose a PCP or obtain referrals for eligible services from specialists, having one can be very beneficial. As the primary doctor who may know the member best or being the first person, they can contact with medical questions and issues, having a PCP can make a difference by:
- Getting to know a member’s health history and health goals
- Providing routine care, such as annual checkups, which may help identify potential health issues earlier
- Managing and coordinating chronic disease care
- Identifying, preventing and reducing disease risk factors
- Advising when to see a specialist (and providing referrals if needed)
- Creating a stronger patient-physician relationship
Even though this recommendation has been added, the Select Plus plan is not changing. UnitedHealthcare will continue to promote the value of coordinated care while encouraging members to make informed decisions about where to seek care. This makes the Select Plus plan an even more flexible option that helps members and employers easily control costs.
