A significant number of employers are not on the right pace to gear up for open enrollment. As of July, many had not yet planned or designed employee communications, reviewed compliance and eligibility issues, set goals, or documented procedures, according to a survey by Employee Benefit Advisor. Employers say that their top challenges are making final decisions on plans and designing communications to help employees understand plan changes. According to the article, advisors should do the following to help clients prepare:
- Work with employers to fine-tune communication plans. Consider how to improve on employee communications.
- Encourage employers to make decisions now, such as whether to add voluntary benefits or promote employee utilization of the wellness program.
- Prepare employers to look at open enrollment as something that should be managed year-round instead of as a one-time event.
- Ask employers about gaps in coverage.
- Discuss with employers what they are trying to accomplish with their benefits programs over the next two to three years.
