Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 852 (Pan) to allow California to contract to manufacture generic drugs, lowering costs and increasing access for consumers.
He also signed SB 855 (Wiener), which would significantly expand what mental health and substance use disorder services are considered medically necessary. Current state law requires health plans to cover medically necessary treatment of just nine serious mental illnesses. The new law would expand that coverage to include a much broader array of mental health issues and substance use disorder conditions. A recent CDC report reveals an extensive need for mental health services as anxiety, depression, and suicide have become more prevalent than ever.
