Self-insured plans are getting more popular according to an annual report by the Department of Labor. The recently released report is based on Form 5500 filings for 2017 and 2018. During that period, the growth of self-insured plans grew 8%, outpacing the growth of health plans overall at 5%.
As many as 18,700 self-insured plans offered ancillary benefits compared to only 6,800 that did not offer them. The gap is even greater with mixed-insured plans, with 3,900 offering ancillary benefits compared to only 200 that did not.
