UPDATE: Change Healthcare began mailing written notices to individuals affected by the incident on Monday, July 29, 2024.
Change Healthcare was attacked by hackers on or about February 21, 2024. While Change Healthcare is a software company providing services to providers, it is owned by Optum, which is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group. UnitedHealth Group is also the parent company for UnitedHealthcare.
Change Healthcare and UnitedHealth Group believe that the hack was limited to Change Healthcare systems and they have high confidence that the hackers did not reach Optum, UnitedHealth Group, or UnitedHealthcare systems. However, they are now also aware that files containing protected health information and/or personally identifiable information have been released on the "dark web" and they, plus other information, may be available to other unscrupulous actors. Analysis of the impact is continuing and they state they cannot yet identify who was affected.
In the meantime, they have established the following resources for consumers:
- A consumer-facing FAQ is available on the Internet.
- Concerned consumers can also reach a dedicated support center online or by calling 1-866-262-5342. This support center offers:
- Further information about the situation;
- Free credit monitoring/identity theft protection for consumers who may be impacted; and
- Trained clinicians to provide emotional support services.
Please note that, since UnitedHealth Group has not yet been able to identify exactly who was affected, these consumer resources cannot provide specifics about individual impacts.
Amwins Connect has been monitoring this situation since February, and will update this article with more information as it becomes available.
