Beginning in 2019, UnitedHealthcare will pass drug manufacturer rebates directly to members when they fill prescriptions through retail pharmacies or home delivery. Currently, UnitedHealthcare has been collecting these rebates and spreading them across the entire book-of-business to help reduce member premiums.
Members and providers will be able to view available manufacturer rebates using UnitedHealthcare’s online tools. This will allow members to see their actual cost, with any applied rebates, before getting their prescription. UnitedHealthcare decided to implement Point-of-Sale Discounts as part of a broader effort to simplify pharmacy benefits, expand transparency, lower members’ drug costs and improve the member experience.
