UnitedHealthcare vision members in six geographic locations, including the Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., metropolitan areas, now have access to additional screenings and benefits related to childhood myopia, which is the inability to see far-away objects clearly.
The prevalence of myopia, also known as nearsightedness, has increased in recent years due to reduced outdoor activities and increased time spent reading and using electronic devices. One in three children in the United States experience this issue, which is linked to a greater risk of developing cataracts, glaucoma, myopic macular degeneration and other eye diseases.
UnitedHealthcare vision members in the affected areas now have access to a complimentary comprehensive assessment for myopia (a $200 value) and a discount of $250 on the first year of myopia management treatment for new pediatric patients. These appointments, which are an additional option and will not count toward any visits covered under the member's plan, are offered in collaboration with Treehouse Eyes, a leader in childhood myopia management. Benefits are available through participating Treehouse Eyes locations.
This value-added discount, which is not related to any routine vision benefit coverage, is also available to UnitedHealthcare members in the Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Seattle areas. The goal is to expand this discount program to additional UnitedHealthcare vision members in other areas later this year and into 2024.
In addition, UnitedHealthcare vision members can save up to 20% on Dell XPS laptops with Eyesafe blue-light-blocking properties.
