Small Group Medicare Primary Issues

Health plans sponsored by employers with fewer than 20 employees pay secondary to Medicare for active employees. Some health insurance companies adjudicate claims for these employees “as if” they have Medicare, even if the employee has not enrolled in Part B or D. This can leave a participant with large claims not paid by either Medicare or the employer plan. It sounds like UHC has recently changed its policy regarding this, and many small employers have been surprised by the change.
