For many years, there was no upward trend in health plan benefits for infertility. But that’s changing, according to a survey by Mercer. Over the past five years, more large employers have been offering fertility benefits. Since the largest employers are often trendsetters, they may be leading a broader movement. Almost a fifth of employers with no IVF coverage say they’re likely offer it in the next two years compared to only 5% in 2006.
Virtually all employers that added infertility coverage say that it didn’t significantly increase medical plan costs.
Sixty-one percent of large employers (500+) and 32% of small employers (50-499 employees) cover some type of infertility services. Even when employers provide some fertility benefits, coverage is often limited to an evaluation by an infertility specialist. However, over the past five years, more services have been covered.
