Anthem Blue Cross will issue Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) rebate checks to small group market employers in August. Under the ACA’s MLR provision, health insurance companies must spend at least 80% of the premiums they receive on health care services for small groups and 85% for large groups. Otherwise, they must issue a rebate for part of the premium. Anthem Blue Cross computes calculations and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) audits the MLR rebates.
If a group does not receive a rebate, it means that Anthem has met the MLR standard.
Please keep in mind that MLR calculations are complicated. LISI has an MLR Rebate Calculator, but these are only estimates. Anthem also has a helpful MLR FAQ.
