Protection for Reproductive Health in Women
The Biden-Harris Administration announced an ongoing commitment to the protection of women's rights to reproductive health care.
The focus is on education, privacy, access to contraception, and abortions in emergency situations where the woman's life is at risk.
It is clear that non-grandfathered group health plans must provide broad contraceptive coverage unless the employer has a moral or religious objection to such coverage.
To date, the Administration has taken action to:
- Protect access to abortion, including FDA-approved medication abortion;
- Defend access to emergency medical care;
- Support the ability to travel for reproductive health care;
- Strengthen access to high-quality, affordable contraception;
- Safeguard the privacy of patients and health care providers; and
- Ensure access to accurate information and legal resources.
Group health plans are generally not required to provide coverage for abortions under federal law, and in several states may even be prohibited from doing so.
The Administration promises protection for those providing abortion coverage in cases where the woman's life is at risk. A fact sheet has been posted on the Whitehouse.gov website.
