This is a reminder that the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) issued updated prevent services guidelines for women and it was approved December 30, 2021.
Non-grandfathered plans and insurers must cover the following benefits without cost-sharing to individuals and is effective for plan years beginning on or after December 30, 2022.
It is important to note that these benefits were recommendations made by the WPSI – Women’s Preventive Services Initiative and Approved by the HRSA.
- Breastfeeding Services and Supplies – comprehensive lactation support services to include consultation, counseling, education by clinicians and peer support services, and breastfeeding equipment and supplies. These benefits should be provided during the antenatal, perinatal, and postpartum periods. More detail on page 1764 in the Federal Register at the link below.
- Contraception – adolescent and adult women to have access to a full range of contraceptives and contraceptive care. This recommendation includes the full range of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, granted, or cleared contraceptives. See the link below to the FDA document.
- Screening for HIV Infection – adolescent and adult women, ages 15 and older, receive a screening test for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) at least once during their lifetime.
- Counseling for Sexually Transmitted Infections – behavioral counseling by a health care clinician or an appropriately trained individual. This would be for those adolescent and adult women at an increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Preventing Obesity in Midlife Women – counseling midlife women aged 40 to 60 years with normal or overweight body mass index (BMI).
